When it came to appointing a new CFO for Rubix, nobody could match the industry knowledge and business experience of our very own Katy Phillips. With almost two decades of experience, including twelve years at Rubix, her role as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is both challenging and rewarding, suited to her passion for financial excellence and strategic foresight.
A journey of growth and leadership
Katy originally joined Brammer in 2012, and has witnessed first hand the growth and evolution into the Rubix we know today. The pace of change of the group has given the opportunity for Katy to grow, learn and adapt with the business. She has continued to pursue a range of perspectives as she has guided the business through change, helped it to navigate industrial complexities and driven financial performance.
Thriving in a dynamic environment
Rubix is fast-paced and varied. “The organisation doesn’t stand still and is always driving forwards to respond to the ever-changing needs of our customers,” says Katy. “Although I don’t deal with customers every day, it’s vital that I stay close to my colleagues who do. It’s how I make sure that my colleagues in Group roles are close to the realities of European manufacturing.” This dynamic nature keeps her constantly adapting and innovating.
Championing innovation and collaboration
A key part of her role is supporting local teams in different markets to streamline operations and enhance decision-making. “HQ is not an ivory tower but a knowledge centre promoting best practices and providing support to local markets,” she explains. Her approach fosters collaboration and continuous improvement.
Anecdotes of excellence
Although change is a constant, there are moments of major transition for any business and a pivotal moment for Rubix was the merger of IPH and Brammer, which is what created the business we have today. During the integration, Katy’s strategic insights ensured a seamless process, resulting in substantial growth and new opportunities for Rubix. “Seeing the tangible results of our efforts is incredibly fulfilling,” she recalls.
Beyond the balance sheet
Outside the realm of financial management, Katy is committed to mentoring emerging leaders. Benefiting from a h3 mentor early in her career, she mentors delegates in Rubix’s Women in Business Programme, sharing her knowledge to inspire the next generation of female leaders.
Balancing professional and personal life
With two young children, managing home life alongside a busy professional schedule is a challenge. Conscious of the difficulties in finding the work/life balance for anyone, Katy is determined to do something about it. She ensures that Rubix is not just a place of work but a community where employees can thrive both professionally and personally. She is an active advocate for Rubix’s open and progressive culture, where everyone is encouraged to share ideas.
Looking Ahead
As Rubix continues to expand and evolve, Katy focuses on sustainable growth and financial stability. While the organisation is large, its corporate structure is relatively small, providing exposure to various people, processes, and projects. “There is always room to make your mark at Rubix,” says Katy.
Katy Phillips exemplifies the dedication, expertise, and forward-thinking attitude that drive Rubix forward. Her leadership as CFO not only strengthens the company’s financial foundation but also inspires those around her to strive for excellence in everything they do.
